On a clear day, the views are spectacular and photographic opportunities are limitless. After climbing through the first 2 miles of forested switchbacks, you will break out onto Skyline Ridge. After you are on the ridge, you will be treated to a continuous feast of great scenery. The greatest part of this hike is that you don't have to go to the end of the trail for payback. There will be spectacular scenery along the entire length of Skyline Ridge. The ridge is the destination.
A typical view from the approach to Skyline Ridge.
From I-5 near Bellingham, take exit 255 (Mt. Baker Hwy/E. Sunset Dr./WA-542). Follow WA-542 for 34.2 miles (or drive 1 mile east of the Glacier Public Service Center) and turn right on Glacier Creek Road/NF-39. Soon (135 ft.), you will come to a fork, turn left onto Dead Horse Road/NF-37 and drive 12.4 miles along the south side of the North Fork Nooksack River on steep (at times), rough but passable gravel road to the trailhead.
